Kitchens Now And Kitchens Then

I was browsing the web looking for the latest trends in kitchens and I came across these pictures:

While I do love all the modern conveniences these pictures of the 2010 kitchens might offer, and while I am trying to organize my house and simplify my life, I did find these kitchens all a little too organized, too cold, and too minimalist for my taste.

Now compare the latest trends for kitchens in those 2010 pictures to the latest trends in kitchens in 1910:

I have to admit, I do love today's technology, but there is something about these old 1910 kitchens that I am so attracted to.

Well, to tell you the truth, my dream kitchen would probably look more like this:

Or this:

Or even this:

What about you, which would be your preference?

  1. A cozy kitchen. I love quaint and homey. I would love to have a fireplace in my kitchen with antique cabinets! :-)

  2. I also prefer a cozy kitchen to the "cold" modern ones. I just don't feel comfortable in a ultra modern home. Give me color, textures and just enough "clutter" to feel lived in...

  3. So glad you said what you did as I was scrolling through the photo's of the newer kitchens and found them to be so sterile and cold.....I have to go with warm and cosy, a kitchen that says "sit down and share a cup of coffee" with fresh curtains blowing in the breeze and the smell of baking coming from the oven......hugs to Jayden and Mia....:-)

  4. OMG!!! I just realized that my kitchen is from 1910!! How can that be when my house was built in 1947??? I am a throwback! I am outdated! I do have a microwave, does that count?

  5. I love a bit of modern with a touch of rustic, so I would combine the OLD and the NEW! :) Ohhhh....add floor to ceiling doors (and warm weather all year long, and I wouldn't leave! Ha! :0

  6. Great post for this new year! Love seeing the contrast of today's kitchens (or what we are "supposed" to like, today) versus the 1910 versions. I'm with you, and would like a combination of both - much more on the cozy, comfy side than the modern sterile look.
    Happy New Year!

  7. Happy New Year Eileen. Those modern kitchens look like they will never be used. They belong in a house for the go out for dinner people not cook your own meals people like us. I love the old kitchens with all the clutter and trimmings. Your dream kitchens are what I prefer great choice. Take care Carol

  8. I'm definitely with YOU on this one! This year, in spite of cut in my husband's salary, I hope to be able to save up for some wood floors for our kitchen/dining area. Currently we have some awful linoleum (that wasn't laid correctly in the first place, has bumps in it, and is difficult to keep clean) and light-colored carpet in the eating area (BAD idea!).

  12. Hello my darling, I guess as my Aunt Rose use to say, we are from the same cloth. Like you I too dislike the look of the modern; however, I have to admit, I like the convenience of them. A kitchen in my opinion is the most important part of the home and has to be warm, inviting and lovely. My kitchen is full of plates and teacups which adorn the walls and counters with rosy tablecloth and pink and blue colors everywhere, with baskets of fruit and veggies placed where I find room. I think it is charming and it's my favourite room of my cottage.

Sweetie, I do hope you had a wonderful time ringing in the New Year and that 2010 turns out to be the best year of your life, followed by many more. Thanks for all your visits and sweet comments; you are a dear friend...a true treasure.

  13. Hello Eileen...Now girl you can keep all the above kitchens...they are way too cold and industrial looking for me....now the last kitchen in Yellow stole my heart...I just love an old fashion kitchen any day...Girl when I remodel in 1996 I made my kitchen look as old as I could...of course now I wished I had added more furniture pieces as counters but only had room for my old general store bin counter...hey maybe I sure start over ha ha!! I think not all that work would kill me now at my age and I got real tired of trying to cook in my laundry room in 1996 ha ha!! Many blessings to you this year my friend...hugs and smiles Gl♥ria

I don't like the new modern kitchens...they look like something from the Jetsons :) I loved Bernies comment...I love the older, cozy kitchens. Wonderful post!!!
